SUMMARY:Engaging in Transdisciplinary Climate Research (11.00-11.50 am PST)
DESCRIPTION:Register: https://climatesolutions.ubc.ca/news-and-events/events/graduate-student-discussion-engaging-transdisciplinary-climate-research\n  \nConducting climate change research requires individuals from across disciplines to work together on solutions. But it’s not always simple – researchers are often trained within specific disciplines with techniques\, approaches and customs that differ from others working towards similar solutions. So where do we begin? \nIn this session\, Drs. Robert VanWynsberghe (Education) and Naoko Ellis (Applied Science) will explore the topic of transdisciplinary approaches to climate research by working with participants to:\n– Discuss the rationale for a transdisciplinary approach\n– Identify who the actors are in transdisciplinary research\n– Explore how to initiate conversations with various actors about transdisciplinary approaches\n– Consider how we show up in these conversations ourselves\n– Reflect on how to create innovative spaces where transdisciplinary approaches can thrive \nOnline event hosted by the University of British Columbia’s Climate Solutions Research Collective.\nDr. Rob VanWynsberghe and Dr. Naoko Ellis presenters. \nPresenters: \nDr. Naoko Ellis presenters\, Professor\, UBC Faculty of Applied Science\nDr. Rob VanWynsberghe\, Professor\, UBC Faculty of Education

SUMMARY:Needs of training to embed sustainability into education (10-11 am EST; 15.00-16.00 GMT)
DESCRIPTION:If we’re determined to tackle climate change\, ecological emergency\, and to achieve the other sustainable development goals\, it is crucial that people involved in teaching and education are receiving training on how to embed SDGs in curriculum and link with institutional strategy and objectives. We must empower and engage them to be part of the change and strategy to achieve the SDGs. There are many countries around the world where academics are not well trained\, and they are not sure how to embed sustainability in curriculum and education strategy. They are still using traditional methods and learners are also not learning in an effective environment. Hence\, there is a need to provide training to those academics or institutions how to enhance learning and teaching environment as well as embedding sustainability in the curriculum. \nPresenters: Dr Aliar Hossain – Head of Department\, University of Northumbria (London Campus)\, UK\nDr Natalie Coers – Lecturer of Global Agricultural Leadership Development\, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Leadership Institute\, USA\nDr Malak Qaid – Ph.D. in Public Law and Political Science at FSJES\, Morocco) \n  \nJoin at meeting time: https://gatech.zoom.us/j/93724395743

An action-oriented outcome document\, Pact for the Future\, is expected to be agreed by Member States through intergovernmental negotiations on issues they decide to take forward. \nThe effects of inequality\, poverty\, conflict\, climate change\, and the adverse impacts of technology – amongst others – are causing severe threats to the world. As the UN Secretary-General asserted in Our Common Agenda\, ‘Humanity faces a stark and urgent choice: a breakdown or a breakthrough’. Awareness of potential catastrophe and dedication to transformation for better futures provides opportunities to mobilize collective intelligence towards just and sustainable futures for all. \nSpeakers in the first UNESCO Chairs Seminar of 2024 will provide an overview of the zero draft of the Pact for the Future. UNESCO Chairs and other experts will have the opportunity to react to the zero draft\, which comprises a chapeau and the following Chapters: \n1. Sustainable Development & Financing for Development\n2. International Peace and Security\n3. Science\, Technology and Innovation and Digital Cooperation\n4. Youth and Future Generations\n5. Transforming Global Governance. \nIf agreed by governments\, a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations would be annexed to the Pact for the Future. \nIn this Seminar\, UNESCO Chairs will interact with invited experts to discuss the zero draft\, and to consider how UNESCO Chairs and research partners might engage with these issues from their diverse intellectual and geographic vantage points. Subsequent UNESCO Chairs Seminars (April to July 2024) will focus on the substance of each of the 5 themes. \n  \nOpening remarks: Sobhi Tawil\, Director\, Future of Learning and Innovation Division\, UNESCO \nOpening presentation: ‘The Pact for the Future – zero draft’ Zazie Schafer\, Director\, Bureau of Strategic Planning\, UNESCO \nUNESCO Chairs and research partners\n• Charles Hopkins and Katrin Kohl\, UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education\ntowards Sustainability\, York University\, Canada\n• Vernor Muñoz Villalobos\, Head of Policy & Advocacy\, Global Campaign\nfor Education; & Education and Academia Stakeholder Group (EASG)\,\nCosta Rica\n• Susan Osireditse Keitumetse\, UNESCO Chair on African Heritage Studies\nand Sustainable Development\, University of Botswana\, Botswana \nComments and discussion\nModerator: Zazie Schafer\, Director\, Bureau of Strategic Planning\, UNESCO\nAll participants \nClosing remarks\nKeith Holmes\, Research Coordinator\, UNITWIN/UNESCO Charis Programme\,\nFuture of Learning and Innovation Division\, UNESCO

SUMMARY:We Demand FASHION 2024 SDG 12: Bazaar & Small Business Sustainability (4 March 8:00 am – 6 March 17:00\, Philippines\, PHST)
DESCRIPTION:Event information: https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=828201339320867&set=a.467110008763337\n  \nFast fashion and social media have created a perfect storm in the fashion industry. Social media platforms have made it easier for fast fashion brands to reach a global audience and promote their products. However\, this has also fueled the rapid production and consumption of cheap\, disposable clothing\, with significant environmental and social consequences. Thus\, the Internationalization and Linkages (InterLink) Office of San Pedro College aims to address this phenomenon through We Demand FASHION: Forward-Thinking\, Attainable\, Sustainable\, Humane\, and Innovative Options Now. \nThis project will be conducted during Interlink Week\, which is on March 4 to 6\, 2024 where the San Pedro College community and beyond will complete various projects supporting the skill augmentation of students and globalization efforts. \nWe Demand FASHION aims to provide students and business owners an avenue to hone their entrepreneurial skills through retailing secondhand apparel in an Ukay-ukay Bazaar. This event is open to serve fellow students\, faculty\, and staff to introduce and practice sustainable efforts as stakeholders in the ever-growing clothing industry. Furthermore\, this event is opened by a seminar including themes of career building\, the consequences of trends and fast fashion\, and consumer welfare\, all centered around creating a positive economic\, social\, and environmental impact. \nDuring the Ukay-ukay Bazaar\, the vendors will consist of different business owners and student entrepreneurs who will set up their stalls at the start of each day and subsequently be asked to pack up at the end of each day of the event. Food vendors will also be promptly invited to increase customer traffic and provide diverse options for students to choose from while visiting the bazaar. \nTarget Audience\nSecondary and Tertiary Students of San Pedro College\nSecondary and Tertiary Faculty Members of San Pedro College\nSan Pedro College Personnel\nLocal Businesses of Davao City\nDavao Colleges and Universities Network (DACUN) schools\nInternational Partners in University Global Coalition
