SUMMARY:Addressing the Sustainable Development Goal of quality education through Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) between Mexico and the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Higher education institutions are charged with preparing students to be world citizens who possess holistic perspectives on diverse international cultures. The demand for technology-enhanced Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) courses with international partners has increased due to the travel restrictions as a result of the global pandemic since early 2020. \nThis presentation will explore two faculty members’ journey of collaboration between Mexico and the United States\, and share the process of developing and delivering COIL courses using innovative pedagogy\, high impact practice\, and technology to facilitate the students’ learning experience and address the Sustainable Development Goal # 4 of quality education. Student voices will be highlighted in content\, aligning to the student learning outcomes and professional organization’s standards. The presenter will discuss the lessons learned and strategies used to overcome the barriers related to different languages\, time zones\, cultures\, and disciplines. The presentation will also talk about the pandemic’s impact on student’s motivation during the development of the COIL course\, how teachers and students could work together to cope with low motivation due to the pandemic\, and how students can be resilient and find education a tool to find the drive that has been blocked by the ongoing conditions around the world. \nPresenters: \nDr. Jie Zhang\, Professor\, State University of New York Brockport\nMs. Silvia García Himmelstine\, Professor\, Universidad del Caribe \n  \nJoin Zoom Meeting https://brockport-edu.zoom.us/j/87287584904?pwd=RmtIN0dEc09WMC9SY1Zqb05wT09rZz09 \nMeeting ID: 872 8758 4904 Passcode: 458907

SUMMARY:17 Books: Higher Education and the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:Emerald Publishing has commissioned Wendy Purcell as Series Editor for 17 books\, one per SDG. Wendy in turn has invited a global cadre of 17 editors\, one per book\, to address one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, specifically through the lens of higher education (HE). The book series will examine the role of the global HE sector in delivering against that goal directly through teaching/learning\, research/innovation and community engagement/service. It will also capture how HE works with public\, private and plural actors to advance fulfillment of the goals. Identifying successes to date\, challenges ahead and offering insights through relevant case studies\, the series will reveal the opportunities afforded by embracing the SDGs at a strategic level within HE. \nThe event will showcase the upcoming book series\, highlight the critical role of the student voice and hear from some of the editors about how they are planning to approach their goal and the role of HE in delivering the SDGs. \nShort presentations with facilitated discussions. \nPresenters: \nWendy M. SUMMARY:17 Rooms: A new way to take practical next steps for the Sustainable Development Goals
DESCRIPTION:This event will introduce the 17 Rooms initiative and workshop the 17 Rooms process for a university context.Co-convened by the Brookings Institution and The Rockefeller Foundation since 2018\, 17 Rooms is a new approach to spurring collective action for the SDGs. Participants form working groups (or “Rooms”)\, one per SDG\, and propose specific\, practical next steps that can be achieved in 12-18 months to make progress for each. Action proposals are shared across Rooms to spot opportunities for cross-SDG collaboration that might bubble up. \nUniversities have been first-movers in adopting and adapting the “17 Rooms-X” process\, finding it a powerful device to (i) raise SDG-awareness\, (ii) make the SDGs practical and approachable\, (iii) catalyze new campus and community partnerships\, and (iii) align university-wide research\, teaching\, and strategic initiatives with the SDGs. Participants in this event will (i) learn the basics of the 17 Rooms process\, (ii) be invited to join the 17 Rooms-X Community of Practice and (iii) gain access to the 17 Rooms-X “beta toolkit.” \nLearn more about 17 Rooms: https://www.brookings.edu/project/17-rooms/ \nPlease register for this event ahead of time to help us design and tailor the event. \nPRE-REGISTER for the event at: https://airtable.com/shre6g8hDhflSVfci \nPanelists include: \nJacob Taylor\, Senior Project Manager\, 17 Rooms Initiative\, Center for Sustainable Development\, Brookings Institution\nShrijana Khanal\, Project Coordinator\, 17 Rooms Initiative\, Center for Sustainable Development\, Brookings Institution\nJason Ens\, Executive Director\, Academic Policy\, Planning\, and Strategic Initiatives\, Concordia University\nJudit Ungvari\, Research and Innovation Officer\, Institute for a Sustainable Earth\, George Mason University\nHeather Kincaide\, Director\, International\, Queen’s University
