DESCRIPTION:Environmental Parrot is excited to host “Understanding Climate Change: From Basics to Action”\, a one-day educational event on March 6\, 2025\, in Monrovia\, Liberia. This in-person event is designed to provide foundational knowledge about climate change while inspiring actionable solutions. It aims to empower individuals\, communities\, and organizations to take meaningful steps toward achieving UN SDG Goal 13: Climate Action. The event will demystify climate change by breaking it down into simple\, digestible components\, covering the science\, impacts\, and solutions. Participants will engage in interactive sessions\, hands-on workshops\, and open-floor discussions to explore practical climate solutions\, such as reducing carbon footprints\, adopting sustainable agriculture\, and embracing renewable energy. By addressing these challenges within the context of Liberia—a nation particularly vulnerable to climate impacts—the event underscores the importance of local and community-led action. The day will include inspirational talks\, expert-led discussions\, and youth-focused activities designed to empower the next generation of climate leaders. Attendees will also have opportunities to network with peers\, experts\, and organizations working in the climate and environmental fields. By the end of the event\, participants will have a clear understanding of climate change basics\, actionable strategies for resilience and mitigation\, and the inspiration to implement sustainable practices in their communities. Learn how Valerie’s educational game\, “Become an Earth Doctor\,” sparked a collaboration that led to BCIT students creating expansion decks focused on local BC ecosystems. Learn how this collaborative approach fosters a “growing” OER that benefits both institutions and beyond. She teaches into the Forest and Natural Areas Management diploma\, the Fish\, Wildlife and Recreation diploma\, and the Ecological Restoration programs. Julia began creating and use Open Educational Resources (OER) in 2019 and has led and contributed to several projects. She has participated in delivering PD sessions on open education\, has encouraged her BCIT colleagues to engage in open education\, and works with colleagues beyond BCIT to share her expertise. \nValerie Miller (she/her) holds a PhD in land reclamation from the University of Alberta\, which focused on building soils using mine waste at a diamond mine in northern Canada. As Outreach and Engagement Lead for Future Energy Systems\, a research program at the University of Alberta\, Valerie manages the Energy Explorers training program\, coordinates the extensive outreach and engagement program\, and works with numerous external partners to provide public access to research and researchers. She is the author of The Energy Adventures of Tommy and Remi series.
