Goal 12. Responsible Consumption and Production

Organization name: George Mason University

Project description:
Aviation contributes ~4% of anthropogenic global warming. Only 35% of the 4% is from CO2. 55% of the 4% is from Aircraft Induced Clouds (also known as Contrails). Detailed modeling and analysis shows that: (1) on an average day, only 15% of the airline flights in the U.S. generate Aircraft Induced Clouds, (2) a small change in cruise altitude could reduce the Aircraft Induced Clouds by 67%. The benefit of addressing Aircraft Induced Clouds is that it impacts the Earth’s temperature structure today (while curtailing CO2 emissions affects Earth’s temperature structure in 20 years). Reducing Aircraft Induced Clouds should be part of the climate action portfolio
