Fast fashion and social media have created a perfect storm in the fashion industry. Social media platforms have made it easier for fast fashion brands to reach a global audience and promote their products. However, this has also fueled the rapid production and consumption of cheap, disposable clothing, with significant environmental and social consequences. Thus, the Internationalization and Linkages (InterLink) Office of San Pedro College aims to address this phenomenon through We Demand FASHION: Forward-Thinking, Attainable, Sustainable, Humane, and Innovative Options Now.
This project will be conducted during Interlink Week, which is on March 4 to 6, 2024 where the San Pedro College community and beyond will complete various projects supporting the skill augmentation of students and globalization efforts.
We Demand FASHION aims to provide students and business owners an avenue to hone their entrepreneurial skills through retailing secondhand apparel in an Ukay-ukay Bazaar. This event is open to serve fellow students, faculty, and staff to introduce and practice sustainable efforts as stakeholders in the ever-growing clothing industry. Furthermore, this event is opened by a seminar including themes of career building, the consequences of trends and fast fashion, and consumer welfare, all centered around creating a positive economic, social, and environmental impact.
During the Ukay-ukay Bazaar, the vendors will consist of different business owners and student entrepreneurs who will set up their stalls at the start of each day and subsequently be asked to pack up at the end of each day of the event. Food vendors will also be promptly invited to increase customer traffic and provide diverse options for students to choose from while visiting the bazaar.
